What The Heck Is This?

A Virtual Model Airplane Kit? What?

I love building model airplanes, and for a long time have contemplated whether there might be some way to capture the essence of what I love about building model airplanes into a computer simulation/ video game. To be sure, there is an entire universe of flight simulations with very visually stunning aircraft models, complete with historical skins, highly detailed cockpits and equipment -- and for the dedicated simmer creating those models and skins something very similar to the the dedicated model airplane builder's hobby -- but it is still at its essence a different experience than that of the model builder opening a kit, looking through the parts, choosing a scheme, and proceeding thru the build. And it is that experience I am trying to recreate with Aircraft in Pixels.

At this point in its development it's still ridiculously crude and far from complete, but I am happy to have implemented a construction system and a finishing system that I think replicates the fun of painting and decaling a model airplane. Currently you can build the fuselage "skeleton," add many equipment components, and skin the fuselage with plywood panels before moving on to the painting stage. But there is much more planned! Not only will the missing components in the build be realized (including building one of the Mercedes six cylinder motor from dozens for parts), but there will be fabric options, optional parts and even a rigging system for the bracing and control wires. With the help of WWI author and expert Jim Miller I have put together 5 historic marking schemes, with other to come, and still more eventually in the form of DLC.
